Spirit Rock Meditation Center is a Buddhist-based Insight Meditation Center in Marin County, CA
(located 19 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge) that offers a range of meditation classes,
programs, and residential meditation retreats.
Spirit Rock has a 96-bed residential retreat center and a staff of approximately 50.
JOB SUMMARY
Spirit Rock’s Kitchen Manager (KM) ensures the smooth and consistent operation of the Spirit Rock
kitchen and dining hall, hires and supervises all kitchen staff, and models behavior that supports
mindfulness practice in the retreat environment. The KM leads and mentors kitchen staff through
effective communication, coaching, training and development and provides guidance in optimal work
performance and meditative awareness. Responsible for menu planning and recipe development,
training of new cooks on all kitchen operations, and providing direction during meal prep and
execution. The KM cooks one shift per week. The KM oversees annual performance appraisals,
oversees retreat logistics for the kitchen, conducts meetings, develops and updates staffing
schedules, prepares budgets and is a member of Spirit Rock’s Management Team. This is a full-time
salaried position with a 37.5 hour work week. Typical schedule is M-F 10am to 6pm except for
retreat opening days.
QUALIFICATIONS
Three to five years experience as a kitchen manager and chef in a contemplative retreat setting.
Required skills include experience supervising and motivating staff, high volume purchasing and
cooking, knowledge of commercial kitchen equipment and appliances, and knowledge of organic whole
foods ingredients and sources. Strong interpersonal communication skills, including conflict
resolution and wise decision making. Strong administrative and business sense: able to integrate
people, facilities, and processes to optimize food quality within cost guidelines. Excellent
organizational and time management skills; ability to coordinate, follow through, and manage a
variety of tasks simultaneously. Ability to problem solve and make decisions independently and
quickly. Flexibility in schedule required with the ability to work evenings and weekends
occasionally. Physical stamina required with the ability to work up to 8 hours in the kitchen and
to lift 50 pounds. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and cookbook-management software.
Current food safety certification. Background in Vipassana meditation or another compatible
tradition and experience guiding retreat participants in work meditation practice preferred.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Spirit Rock’s Retreat Center Cook prepares and serves nutritious ovo-lacto vegetarian meals for residential retreats and special events. S/he trains and guides Cook Assistants and Extra Hires, trains and supervises retreatants performing work meditations in the kitchen, and models behavior that supports mindfulness practice in the retreat environment. This is an hourly position averaging 30 hours per week.
QUALIFICATIONS
One to three years of professional cooking experience featuring organic whole food ingredients in a high-volume kitchen, preferably in a contemplative work setting. Flexibility in schedule on a daily and weekly basis, and ability to work evenings and weekends. Strong interpersonal communication skills; ability to take direction; ability to function as both team leader and team player. Strong personal and ethical commitment to bringing mindfulness to all activities of daily life; background or interest in Vipassana meditation or other compatible spiritual tradition. Ability to access and read emails, including schedules and kitchen updates from home. Must have reliable transportation – this is a non-residential position. Working knowledge of Outlook, Microsoft Word, Excel, and cookbook-management software preferred. Good typing and computer skills required for checking emails and typing kitchen meeting minutes. Current food safety certification (California Food Handlers Card).
