The Possibility of Unconditional Compassion

About the Workshop

Unconditional compassion is not just reserved for our cultural heroes and religious figures: we are all capable of developing this powerful quality of care.

In this day-long intensive we will explore how to access an unconditional power of stable care and compassion from within that is healing and sustaining for others and ourselves by drawing on Sustainable Compassion Training practices.

Sustainable Compassion Training highlights our need to experience ourselves as objects of care and compassion in order to extend care and compassion widely to others; our need to be seen in our unconditional worth and human potential in order to see the same in others; and our need to become present to our own feelings with kindness in order to become reliably present to others with kindness.

For those purposes, SCT meditations cultivate three interrelated modes of care as a basis for compassionate action. These three modes are: (1) receiving care, (2) extending care to others, and (3) deep self-care.

In this workshop, we will:

• Explore the science of care and compassion and the possibility of unconditional compassion

• Practice methods for receiving care, extending care, and enhancing self-care

• Consider ways of strengthening our compassion practices in daily life

Seeking mindful housemate for January 1st

We are two wise and self-aware women (50+), jewelry maker/healer and caregiver/therapist, seeking a third person to enrich our 3 bedroom 2 bath cozy north Oakland home beginning January 1st. Room available is upstairs bedroom with shared bath. The ideal person would value a clean, quiet, mostly fragrance free dwelling upstairs to retreat to, with low traffic and noise, perfect for meditation, study, and sleep, and would welcome sharing the downstairs kitchen/living room for occasional visitors and social/musical gatherings. We encourage creative musical nurturing beings with an appreciation for space and beauty. The home is small but very functional, well-insulated, two full sized bathrooms, skylight, washer/dryer and lots of sunlight, and includes a small yard with some raised garden beds. We are both without pets, and would consider a friendly well-behaved pet. The location is about 5 blocks north of the MacArthur BART, one half block west of MLK. Our house is tucked in a cul-de-sac with 5 other similar houses. Rent is $680 and utilities run about $90/month. We are both health conscious and eat a varied diet that includes animal products.

If interested please send us an email at jcdiamond@yahoo.com telling us about yourself, your lifestyle, and what you hope to find in a living situation. Happy to send some photos!

Housing Sublet for February. I am participating in the month-long retreat at Spirit Rock from January 30th – February 25th and am looking to offset some of my cost for the retreat and not working for the month. I have a lower level studio to sublet during that time with flexibility in the dates. The private space has its own entrance, windows, private outdoor area, common deck, and private bathroom with sink, toilet, and shower. There is a separate “wet bar” with a mini fridge, sink, micro wave, nu-wave oven, and electromagnetic hot plate and closet. Room has radiant heat with its own thermostat. I am asking $800 for the month with some possible negotiation. Contact Paul Ciske with questions at 510-912-5775.

Dear EBMC

My name is Angela.

I’m looking for a fragrance-free helper for 8 hours per week and prefer someone with a mindfulness practice.

I’m disabled and chemically sensitive. I can hear, but a vocal chord injury makes it too painful to speak. I communicate almost entirely by writing or with sign language.

The tasks include shopping and other errands; cooking, laundry, cleaning and other light household tasks; and making phone calls.

You must be able to legally work in the US; a non-smoker; able and willing to perform above tasks; not currently using any scented or chemical products including perfumes, scents, soaps, shampoos and laundry products; detail oriented and able to follow precise directions; able to work independently with little supervision; good with English language skills; friendly and reliable; available 3-6 hours per week to start to increase to 8 hours/week; and willing to learn sign language.

Please call me, Angela at 510-604-5163. No texts please. Pay is negotiable.

Thank You!

Please post in Community News and Support Groups:

Orinda Academy (gr. 8-12) will be hosting an Open House event April 19 from 7-9p. We enroll students with mild-moderate learning differences and provide support like a full-time learning support specialist, mindfulness training, yoga, academic coaching, and partner with Coyote Coast Counseling for social/emotional counseling. Having a high school student is stressful enough–having one who struggles with a LD is even more stressful—for the student and the family. Come see how Orinda Academy can help!
